What Were the Big Bedroom Design Trends in 2016?

Our interiors enjoyed a year where everything from brutalist trends to chintzy soft furnishings dominated our homes. And nowhere were these divergent trends more noticeable than in our bedrooms where metal beds sat alongside soft wooden cabinets, and bare filament bulbs illuminated our most private spaces.

This post-modern approach encouraged all of us to get a little more creative than usual in our bids to explore aesthetics that were a world away from traditional furniture showrooms. Instead we scoured the world for inspiration to make our bedrooms a little more magical.

Once again it was Scandinavia that provided the most enduring trend for many homes. In particular the idea of introducing the Danish ‘hygge’ concept into our interiors meant that our bedrooms enjoyed soft and neutral hues on the walls that were offset by plenty of lovely wooden furniture.

The simplicity and elegance of the ‘hygge’ look is a stark contrast to the chintzy look that was prevalent in previous years. Rather than the overly flowery and feminine themes, these interior stylings were much more gender-neutral that was mirrored in a colour palette the involved splashes of unusual blues and greens such as teal and aquamarine.

But whilst this look may have offered a fresh new aesthetic for 2016, many of our bedrooms took inspiration from the brutalist trend that’s been spotted everywhere from our offices to our coffee shops.

As a result we sought to introduce ‘edgy’ materials into our bedrooms with reclaimed wood and exposed brick helping us get that Manhattan loft feel. And this was complemented by the chrome metal finish of the chic beds found at retailers like Bedstar who showed that even our most dependable furniture is not immune from the changes of contemporary tastes.

This trend saw us implementing plenty of unusual lighting ideas in our bedrooms too. With anything from fairy lights, neon lights to the omnipresent filament bulbs offering us a new way to illuminate our homes, it showed that we were more willing to experiment than ever in 2016.

What this all reveals is that we seemed to be enjoying a trend towards increased simplicity in 2016. With our metal beds, filament bulbs, exposed brick revealing the inner workings of our homes, and the Danish influence bringing plenty of wooden softness into our bedrooms, it seems that less was definitely more in 2016.
