Wigan Stun Manchester City To Reach FA Cup Quarter Final

Wigan Stun Manchester City To Reach FA Cup Quarter Final

Will Griggs on fire, still, apparently. League One side Wigan Athletic stunned Premier League leaders Manchester City last night, knocking them out of the FA Cup and spoiling the dream of a quadruple.

Wigan more than held their own throughout, grabbing a late 1-0 victory after Fabian Delph saw red in the first half.

The game changing moment came right on the stroke of half time, on the edge of the Wigan penalty area Fabian Delph slid in on Max Power catching the Latics man, seemingly at around ankle/shin height. That doesn't say it all though, referee Anthony Taylor initially looked to take out a yellow card before changing it for a red, sparking outrage on the two benches with the managers continuing to clash down the tunnel. The majority of pundits seemed to think the decision was harsh, but it is also the kind of tackle we see punished in this day and age.

Away from the controversy it was still a fantastic game. As expected, Manchester City dominated the ball and had plenty of chances including a fantastic opportunity when the ball fell to Fernandinho in the box. The midfielder, who had a relatively good game, couldn't capitalise blazing the strike over. Will Grigg also spurned a great opportunity early in the game as the home side broke away on the counter, his pacey run deserved more at the end but instead he fired into the side netting.

As much as Wigan held their own, most of the game followed the same pattern of the Citizens attacking with the home team holding firm. Aguero and company wasted the opportunities that came their way, in particular a fantastic chance for Laporte who couldn't sort his feet out quick enough.

City looked a different side when most people's pick for player of the season, Kevin De Bruyne, entered the fray. KDB whipped in some stunning crosses and the entire game ran through him once his introduction. However no one was on the end of his delightful balls.

The FA Cup magical moment came in the 79th minute when Will Grigg was played through by Kyle Walker deciding to let the ball run. The forward still had plenty to do as he cut inside, whilst slipping he managed to wrap his foot round the ball and expertly dispatch it into the bottom corner, sparking wild scenes in the ground. City pressed and laid siege to the Wigan goal but the goal wouldn't come, leaving everything to believe, maybe Wigan are just Manchester City's FA Cup bogey team?

There were some unsavoury scenes after the match as Wigan fans stormed the pitch to celebrate, one looked to anger Sergio Aguero which provoked a reaction from the Argentine. City fans also caused a bit of trouble, clearly frustrated by the result, with anger being shown in the stands.
