Five Non League Football Grounds To Take Your Family

Across Manchester, there’s something about football that people of all ages simply can’t get enough off. It’s a real hotbed that spans far beyond the Premier League and United and City.

In fact, it spans far beyond the Football League, with families every weekend getting out and enjoying the many non-league clubs that play on a Saturday afternoon.

From Atherton to Ashton, West Didsbury to Wythenshawe, thousands of children, parents, grandparents and other friends and family descend on the match. It really is a perfect day out, particularly for those that perhaps prefer a little more space and less of the hustle and bustle of the likes of the Etihad and Old Trafford.

For football fans in Manchester who need something a little more accessible, away from the heavy crowds, non-league across the city is what you want, whether you’re looking to take your child to their first game or want to take out a loved one who is receiving specialist dementia care out for some fresh air and to see the beautiful game they love.

But where are the best football grounds across Manchester to take your family out for the day?

Stalybridge Celtic

Located to the east of Manchester in Tameside, Bower Fold, home of Stalybridge Celtic is one of the most picturesque grounds in the country, never mind Manchester.

One of the bigger non-league grounds across Manchester, there is disabled access and plenty of space for children to run around and enjoy their day.

The club dates back to 1909 and has been revitalised over the last 12 months, with new ownership looking to transform the ground’s offering, as well as the team’s performances on the pitch. It’s an exciting time to start watching the club and a great day out for all the family.

Mossley

A stop along on the train from Stalybridge is Mossley, not only a same-league rival as Celtic but also another contender for most picturesque ground in the area.

There’s a real friendly nature to Seel Park, home of the Lilywhites, and the club have garnered a growing number of fans in recent years. That said, there is plenty of space for fans to have that little bit of freedom, while the pies are exquisite. What more could you possibly ask for?

West Didsbury & Chorlton

Speaking of clubs that have gathered larger followings in recent years, West Didsbury & Chorlton have done exactly that. While shelter is at a premium at Brookburn Road and it might not be the best idea for loved ones on a cold, wet Tuesday night, during the spring and summer it’s a good option, provided you get there a bit earlier and secure your spot on the sidelines.

A friendly bunch of supporters, West Didsbury fans are known for their “hipster” vibe, with chants such as “Hummus, Hummus, Hummus” and “West, West wherever you may be, We eat hummus and celery” to the tune of the Lord of the Dance.

There’s a clubhouse that provides hot food and drinks, as well as having accessible toilets.

Bury FC

Bury are back after they went bust just a few years ago and they have returned to Gigg Lane. They’re currently plying their trade in the North West Counties Football League and are in with a good chance of promotion.

The ground itself is a classic Football League stadium, and a good option for those looking for a guaranteed seat and a great atmosphere. There’s disabled access and it’s one of the better equipped non-league grounds around Manchester at the moment.

Altrincham

One of the great non-league clubs, Altrincham are towards the pinnacle of non-league and could well earn promotion to League Two this season.

The ground has plenty of space and accessible amenities, while there is also ample seating to sit and watch the game with a great view. Located just outside the town centre, it’s a solid option for those looking to use public transport and the Metrolink system to get to a game on a Saturday afternoon.
