Award-winning garden inspired by tech finds new home at Manchester University

An award-winning garden, first showcased at the RHS Flower Show Tatton Park 2023, has found its permanent home at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU).

Designed by Rachel Platt and commissioned by J. Parker’s, a bulbs and plants specialist, the garden—called “Chained to Tech” - is a creative blend of nature and technology.

The design mimics the digital world, with rebar structures and fences resembling tangled cables, and laser-cut panels displaying circuit board patterns.

Built using recycled materials like timber and Corten-effect steel, the garden has a cool, industrial vibe. Drought-tolerant plants were carefully chosen to symbolize the stress of too much screen time, while vibrant colours and bold shapes capture the allure of instant digital rewards.
