What is a Franchise?

Despite franchising being worth over £15bn to the UK economy many people do not understand what a franchise is or what sort of businesses operate as franchises, so what is a franchise?

There are several forms of franchising including using franchising to distribute films, music and games but for the purposes of this article we will focus on what is called business format franchising. Business format franchising is when franchise documentation, agreements and training is used to replicate an already trading and successful business. Some of the many documents used to franchise a business include;

  • Franchisor ( the business owner ) business plan

  • Franchisee ( the person running the local franchise ) business plan

  • Franchise agreement – agreement between both parties on how each will operate and agreement of what will be paid to the Franchisor and detailing each others obligations

  • Franchise prospectus – Sales & marketing document used by the franchisor to recruit franchisees

  • Operating manual – The document which explains how a Franchisee will create/start their business and all day to day operations of running the business

  • Training manual – Used by the Franchisor to train each franchisee to understand their obligations as detailed in the operating manual

So what kind of businesses can operate as a franchise? Provided the business operating method can be transferred and the new local market is the same as the existing local area any business can be replicated using a business format franchise, these could include;

  • Automotive – examples of this could be alloy wheel & smart repair businesses, scratch removal and dent removal franchises

  • Home based – This could be anything from B2B sales, finance, consulting, internet services and is an extremely fast growing area with many people seeking improved work/life balance

  • Recruitment – Many recruitment businesses have franchised covering sectors such as hotel & hospitality, domestic care & nursing staff

  • Food & catering – Everyone thinks burgers and fast food but there are many food franchises including corporate catering franchises, pizza franchises, Chinese & Indian food franchises and many mobile catering low cost franchises

  • Hotel – Some of the largest global hotel brands franchise and have used this for decades to grow their brands without acquisition of properties

  • Business advice & consulting – Everything from cost reduction, accountancy & business coaching is provided with these sorts of franchises

The economy of Manchester is amongst the largest in England. Manchester is a city and metropolitan borough of Greater Manchester. It lies within the United Kingdom's second-most populous urban area, with a population of 2.55 million. Manchester's commercial centre is in Manchester city centre, focused on Spinningfields, Mosley Street, Deansgate, King Street and Piccadilly Gardens.

Historically, the world's first industrialised city, the region was once in economic and population decline. In 2012 Greater Manchester South, which includes the cities of Manchester and Salford and three other metropolitan boroughs, was the largest NUTS3 area outside London in economic terms, and growth was 3.8% vs the Core Cities average of 2%.Between 2002 and 2012 Greater Manchester South grew 45% vs. national growth of 44%.Meanwhile, the 2011 census also showed that Manchester was the fastest growing city in the UK in terms of population. Manchester is also a city of contrast, where some of the UK's most deprived and most affluent neighbourhoods can be found. According to the 2010 Indices of Multiple Deprivation Manchester is the 4th most deprived local authority in England. On the other hand, Greater Manchester is home to more multi-millionaires than anywhere outside London, with the City of Manchester taking up most of the tally. In 2013 Manchester was ranked 6th in the UK for quality of life, according to a rating of the UK's 12 largest cities.

Manchester is considered to be a 'beta' global city, rated as the second most globally influential city in the UK after London.

How many of these enterprises are franchises in Manchester that has created such a wealth of job opportunities and wealth? Well given above a lot more than you probably thought at the beginning of this article and franchising is growing rapidly as many people want to control their own career destiny and also enjoy a better work/life balance
