Interior Trends Making A Comeback This Year

Interior Trends Making A Comeback This Year

The one trend that’s likely to define 2019 is no trend at all. Sounds a bit mysterious?

Well, fashion, and by extension interior design trends, has been all about individuality and choosing the pieces that reflect your personality rather than following arbitrary rules. It’s the no wonder that trends that were deemed ‘out of fashion’ are now back to satisfy the wide-ranging tastes of the current market. Wondering which trends are back? Read our guide below.

Big Sofas

Big and corner sofas are back to the delight of our backsides. The last few years saw the market flood with minimal and Scandi-chic sofas that occupied more space than they provided whilst being quite miserly on the padding. If you’re still after one of those then don’t despair – they’re hardly disappearing. But let’s all take a moment to celebrate the return of the big, cosy couch, maybe even a corner one if the space permits, and all the comfort it provides. No need to compromise on design – there’s plenty of models to choose from, letting you enjoy family movie nights and hosting more than one friend at a time unlike their skinny counterparts.

Shag Carpets

The quickest way to add a feeling of plush comfort to any room is through shag carpeting. Forgotten about due to its slightly retro feel, the shag rug is back with an updated look. They’re perfect for adding texture to rooms that are aiming for the look of luxury but look equally great in more modern surroundings, especially in mellow shades of grey and beige or with minimal patterns.

Keeping it simple

Less of a trend and more of a style philosophy, this non-trend is a reaction against ‘hip’ furniture pieces that start to look dated after about a week or two. The focus now is on pieces that are likely to stand the test of time through looks and quality. It’s worth looking beyond the usual furniture shops and spending some time at flea markets or even online auctions for furniture that is truly reflective of your taste.

Wall details

Once again, personality beats out the trend for minimalism. It seems that quite a few homeowners have had enough of plain white walls (2019’s version of magnolia, surely) in favour of…well, whatever you want. Wallpaper is a huge story, go big and bold if you fancy or simply add texture. Gallery walls are another great way to consolidate all those art pieces you’ve been meaning to hang for ages or a way to display the hundreds of photos accumulated on your smartphone.

Terrazzo

This mysteriously named material had fallen out of favour for a little while, with marble dominating kitchen counter surfaces and, well, just about everything else. Terrazzo was commonly used for public floors, but it’s now used for lamps, counters, tables, and much more.
